How Did That Happen?

This song is a little different for me. For one thing, it's only the second song I've ever written with the word "love" in it. I don't really have anything against love songs, but there are so many of them already out there that it's very hard to say something original. To me, a song can't just be a love song. It has to have some kind of twist to it, some unique way of saying the same things we all find ourselves saying from time to time.

Take My Funny Valentine, for example, probably one of the most famous love songs of all time. The singer spends 90% of the time actually insulting the object of his affection, essentially calling her ugly. But then at the last minute, with one or two poetic lines, he turns the whole thing around and it becomes instantly touching.

My particular twist is that this is a "meta-love song." That is, it's a song about a love song, technically not a love song at all, though it is disguised as one. It all started when, in a normal conversation, I used the phrase "shyly yet slyly," unwittingly creating a tongue-twister and a launching point for this, my latest song.

Shyly yet slyly I smiled to the side
Saying, "See, it's just me. It's nothing special"
You said, "Yeah, I know," but you knew I'd lied.
I can't pass it off as a typical trifle.

The lyrics I laid down were simple,
But I should have seen all along.
It seemed like simply a scribble,
Didn't know I'd just written a love song

Slipping to silence, the song ended slowly.
I was seeking a sign, I was singing lowly.
The soft echoes faded, I watched and waited,
I was wanting your word on what I had created.

Yeah, I guess you could call it a ballad,
Not my typical song about drinking,
But the way your eyes glittered and glinted
I could see you knew what I was thinking.

The lyrics I laid down were simple,
But I should have seen all along.
It seemed like simply a scribble.
Didn't know I'd just written a love song.

How
Did that happen?
Tell me what
Was I thinking?
I never was
A love song singer.
I'm just a scribe
And a part time thinker.

The heat of your cheeks went to ruby
But I didn't realize, 'cause my eyes were misty.
I made the music that matched the moody
Words I would have whispered if you would have kissed me.

The lyrics I laid down were simple,
But I should have seen all along.
It seemed like simply a scribble.
Didn't know I'd just written a love song.

So what do you think of my love song?
